LG G5: LG's most daring flagship phone ever

At this year’s MWC in Barcelona in February a lot of flagship smartphones were unveiled from various manufacturers across the globe. The LG G5 was among the hottest flagship smartphones unveiled at the event. It is the Korean tech giant’s most daring flagship phone ever, as it brings a modular design and top-notch features you can find on the planet running Android. With the G5, LG has gotten on the metal body bandwagon. The company has also done away with the rear-mounted volume buttons, which once again are located on the side of the device. The LG G5 is the vendor’s most promising smartphone ever, on which, the company has placed high bets, and hopes to compete against the latest Samsung flagship, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge.

If you are looking for a flagship smartphone running Android, the LG G5 is among the best offerings on the market. Before you make the purchase, let’s take a quick look on the features of the latest LG flagship, so you can decide if it can fulfill your smartphone feature needs or not.
LG G5: features of the latest Korean flagship
The LG G5 flaunts an ergonomic premium design that is fabricated from metal – magnesium alloy. The phone sports elegant curves and refined angles for better gripping, and features an innovative modular design. LG has also introduced several accessories for the device called the LG Friends including the LG 360 Cam, LG Cam Plus, and the LG Hi-Fi Plus with B&O PLAY. These goodies add extra features to the already loaded smartphone. The phone measures 8.6mm around the waist, and tips the scale at 159 grams. The device also gets a fingerprint sensor located right below the rear camera that also works as the power button as well. Overall, the LG G5 offers one of the most innovative designs found on the flagship smartphones, and the LG Friends accessories are a big add-on.
Display and OS
Coming to the display, the LG G5 flaunts a huge 5.3-inch in-cell IPS LCD display bearing quad-HD resolution. The phone offers detailed media viewing experience thanks to a whopping pixel density of 554 pixels per inch. The device gets a new always-on display feature, which shows little notification icons without draining the battery life. It also offers the Knock On feature that lets you turn on/off the display by tapping on the screen. Software-wise, the LG G5 runs Android Marshmallow out-of-the-box. The phone ships with the latest LG UX 5.0, which brings a new launcher, better notification and power controls, and new settings options, when compared to the UX 4.0.
Moving on to the performance, the LG G5 is powered by the latest and most high-end processor from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 820. The SoC gets a quad-core Kryo processor with a clock speed of up to 2.15GHz. The Snapdragon 820 CPU offers a smooth lag-free experience, and is capable of running almost every high-end mobile app or game available on the Play Store. The performance of the phone is further enhanced by meaty 4-gigabytes of RAM and an Adreno 530 graphics processing unit. For storage, the LG G5 comes with 32GB of internal memory, which may be disappointing for some. However, you can increase the storage further by inserting a microSD card in the phone.
Coming to the camera prowess of the LG G5, the phone gets a dual-camera setup on the back. The phone boasts a 16-megapixel main camera sensor, which is supported by an 8-megapixel secondary sensor. The device is capable of recording wide angle videos at 4K quality. For shutter-bugs, the phone also gets a laser for auto-focusing, 3-axis optical image stabilisition, and a full manual focus mode in the camera app. For selfies and video-calling purposes, there’s an 8-megapixel secondary snapper on the front, which delivers wide-angle selfies with bright colours under the low light conditions as well.
Connectivity and battery
As mentioned above, the LG G5 features a fingerprint sensor on the back, which allows you to unlock the phone, secure apps and make secure mobile payments. The phone comes with 4G LTE support for both Indian LTE bands, dual-band Wi-Fi that offers faster browsing and downloading speeds, Bluetooth 4.2 with aptX, NFC and GPS with GLONASS. The device also comes with USB on the go to attach external storage devices and TV-out connectivity options as well. As for the battery, the LG G5 packs a mediocre 2,800mAh unit, which offers a single day of regular usage.
The LG G5 is certainly the most powerful Android smartphones from the Korean electronics giant. With the G5, the company has brought an innovative semi-modular design for smartphones, which increases the scope of adding more features to the phone by attaching additional accessories. However, it’s worth pointing out that all of the additional LG Friends accessories need to be bought separately, which increases the overall costing of the smartphone. In specs department, the LG G5 doesn’t compromises with anything as it offers a bright display, a powerful flagship Snapdragon processor, meaty RAM, impressive camera features, and latest software.
It without a doubt is LG’s most daring flagship smartphone till date. However, it still misses out a few important features like high internal storage and water-and dust-resistance. The phone is coming to India in Q2 this year at the expected price tag of around Rs 49,000. So what’s your take on the latest LG flagship? Share with us all in the comments section.
